Methods for Managing Anxiety & Fear in Young Patients
Regardless of past experiences, some children require a little extra support to help make their visit as positive and comfortable as possible. At KidsDent, we offer various options to help your child relax and feel more confident in their experience at our clinic, including sedation dentistry.
Our dental team will have a thorough and open conversation with you and your child before administering any treatments. As a parent or caregiver, the decision is entirely up to you as to what is best for your child and family.
If you have any questions about our sedation options or would like to book an appointment for your child please call our office. We are always happy to help.
Why Sedation?
As paediatric dentists and parents, we know how important it is to build a strong relationship with our young patients. Dental fear and anxiety are common and can lead to both children and adults avoiding the dentist. This is something we want to help our patients manage and overcome.
Sedation can help improve our patients’ comfort by helping your child relax and remain calm. We may recommend sedation if your child:
- Needs multiple procedures
- Requires a longer procedure.
- Has diverse needs.
- Has high dental anxiety.
Our Sedation Options
Nitrous Oxide
Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) is a safe and effective way to manage mild to moderate dental anxiety. It provides a mild sedative effect and promotes relaxation. It may impair cognitive function and physical coordination, but children can often respond normally to verbal commands and light stimulation during their procedure.
Nitrous oxide has been used safely for years in paediatric dentistry.
General Anaesthesia
In-Office
General anaesthesia puts children into a deep, sedative sleep. General anaesthesia may be appropriate for some children, particularly those with diverse needs.
We can administer general anaesthesia in our office for certain patients and procedures.
Outpatient Hospital
If needed, we may recommend outpatient general anaesthesia treatments in a hospital setting for children with severe dental phobias or special needs. It is also best used for complicated procedures that require patient cooperation.
Conscious Sedation
Conscious sedation uses a combination of nitrous oxide and an oral medication to achieve a sedative effect that, like nitrous oxide, is safe and effective for treating moderate to severe anxiety.
We Can Help at KidsDent
Dental care and hygiene are essential for maintaining good oral health throughout life. The last thing we want is for your child to develop dental fear or anxiety and avoid going to the dentist as an adult.
Our paediatric dental team is experienced in treating children of all backgrounds and needs. If you have questions about sedation, please reach out to us. We would be happy to help.
