Prevention Is the Best Medicine
You probably take your kids to their doctor for regular check-ups. Dental check-ups are just as crucial for their health and well-being. Routine visits to your dentist can help prevent cavities and infections, monitor for gum and bone disease, and help your child avoid tooth fractures and mouth injuries.
We believe we can help kids develop strong oral hygiene habits by helping them foster a sense of pride in their oral health. Please book their dental exam today and see how preventive dentistry can benefit your child.

At-Home Preventive Oral Habits
Preventive dental habits not only take place at the dental clinic; they should also be followed at home. Plus, there is no better time than childhood to learn good dental hygiene habits.
Infants
Babies need their mouths cleaned regularly to promote good oral hygiene. Parents and caregivers can care for their infant’s gums by wiping them with a damp cloth after every feeding, in the morning after the first feeding and before bedtime. This may wipe away bacteria and sugars that can cause future cavities.
You can start brushing your child’s first tooth with a soft bristled and properly sized infant toothbrush twice a day. You can start flossing teeth that touch at any age. We can discuss the introduction of fluoride toothpaste at your next visit.
Children
Children should have their teeth brushed twice a day: once in the morning and again before bedtime.
Children under 3 should have their teeth brushed by an adult using a soft-bristled toothbrush and a small amount of toothpaste. Usually a smear of toothpaste is recommended. The dentist will advise if fluoride is appropriate. Talk to your dentist about brushing your toddler’s teeth and how much toothpaste they recommend you use.
Children between 3 and 6 should be assisted by an adult when brushing their teeth. They should use a soft-bristled toothbrush and a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste.
When using fluoride toothpaste, choose a type that features the symbol for the Canadian Dental Association, and make sure your child spits out the toothpaste when they are done brushing.
See Your Dentist for Regular Preventive Check-ups
Regular check-ups at your dentist’s office are an essential part of preventive oral care. Preventive dentistry not only helps protect your child’s teeth, gums, and overall oral health, preventive methods are often more cost-effective than major dental procedures.
Although not all dental issues can be avoided, good oral health can help prevent dental disease and other problems later in life.
