When Should Children Have Dental Exams?

Infants should start having regular dental check-ups within 6 months of the eruption of their first tooth or by the time they turn 1, whichever comes first.

It is important to bring your child to see their dentist before there is a problem. Ultimately, regular check-ups are intended to catch small problems early, when they are easiest to treat, and teach your child that visiting the dentist helps prevent problems.

Although every child is different and has their own unique dental needs, the most common dental exam schedule is every 6 months.

What to Expect From a Paediatric Dental Exam

A paediatric dental exam is designed to fully evaluate your child’s oral health before there is a problem. This appointment usually includes a teeth cleaning and is intended to teach children proper oral hygiene.

Either your dentist or dental hygienist will:

  • Ask about your child’s drinking and eating habits and evaluate your child’s oral health, hygiene, and risk of tooth decay
  • Remove stains and deposits on your child’s teeth
  • Show your child how to brush and floss their teeth
  • Look for sores or bumps on your child’s tongue, inside cheeks, and the roof of their mouth
  • Assess the impact of pacifier use, thumb-sucking, and other habits
  • Take dental x-rays or perform other diagnostic procedures
  • Apply sealants to permanent molars and other back teeth susceptible to tooth decay
  • Look for bite and alignment issues with your child’s teeth
  • Recommend pre-orthodontic treatments, like mouthpieces or retainers
  • Repair cavities or other tooth defects

As your child gets older, your dental team may counsel them on the risks of:

  • Drinking and eating sugary beverages
  • Smoking
  • Chewing tobacco
  • Eating disorders
  • Oral piercings
  • Contact sports

Your dentist may also discuss wisdom teeth removal.

After the exam, your dentist or hygienist will discuss your child’s oral health exam results. They will go over your child’s risk for tooth decay, health concerns, and preventive measures you can take at home.

Our dental team will also recommend a time to bring your child back for a follow-up visit. These visits typically occur every 6 months, but we may recommend more frequent check-ups if your child has oral health concerns, like tooth decay or bite issues.
